The genetic origin of the variety has not been studied. With the exception of ampelographic collections it is not cultivated for production purposes anywhere else, therefore the center of today’s production is in northern Banat, on the Pearl Island near Bečej. That makes the wine Krokan unique in the whole of Europe. Planted at the end of the 19th century on a 15 hectar stretch of soil on a location where the river Tisa has changed its course, known as the Pearl Island. Krokan is an exceptional generic white wine with controlled appellation originating from the Banat-Tisa valley vine-growing hills. The fullness and freshness of the wine that can be tasted with the very first drop and the aromatized nutmeg scent that permeates from the glass, justify the fame of this pearl from the Pearl Island. |
